Mini Retro Review: The Expert (1995) #badmovies

The Expert
1995
Action

Poor Jeff Speakman. It's a shame that since the amazing The Perfect Weapon, all of his action-based follow-up movies have been lacklustre and poor and thus he was never able to live up to or replicate the high standards that he obtained in that film. Street Knight was a huge disappointment and The Expert fared no better either. This is a revenge thriller when a cop tries to avenge the death of his sister by some evil crank serial killer (Michael Shaner who played the guy who tried to commit suicide by jumping off a building in Lethal Weapon). He doesn't think jail time fits the punishment of the crime & goes all out to seek justice: his way by getting hold of him & beat the living daylights out of him. The problem with The Expert is the story & dialogue becomes so overwhelming and too ambitious for an action film, the action is minimal and that especially as well is not grand or amazing to watch, it is underwhelming. Speakman's fight scenes aren't that great in itself & there is nothing noteworthy that we haven't seen before (his face also looks a tad puffy). The bad guy is hammy & obnoxious and for a plot where the good guy tries to get his revenge, he doesn't get to do this for real until the last 20 mins of the movie. Comedic actor Jim Varney has a brief cameo as a Vietnam vet. There is less action, the story is just dry and a chore to sit through and eats up way too much time & the direction is utterly one-note.

Is It Worth Watching?

Sadly, it is so tame with drama and acting that is the equivalent of a TV drama with not enough good action. The Expert is your typical straight- to- DVD/video shelf filler fodder and it's just as mediocre.
