Christmas With The Kranks
2004
Comedy
Based on the novel by John Grisham, well known for serious legal thrillers, The Pelican Brief, The Firm and Runaway Jury amongst others that got turned into films, Christmas With The Kranks is also surprisingly absent of humour and wit. A couple who hate Christmas, plan to get away from the Xmas cheer so they can go on a cruise, much to the displeasure of their neighbours. I enjoyed Tim Allen in Galaxy Quest and, but for Toy Story and say Home Improvement, he never had the charisma or appeal that other comedic stars that Eddie Murphy and Robin Williams had when they became film stars. With the screenplay by Chris Columbus who did the vastly superior Home Alone, Mrs Doubtfire and Jingle All The Way, Christmas With The Kranks is nowhere near on the levels of those movies; that & the way the film, particularly for a festive film, is single-handly conceived comes across as lazy, joyless and not one single joke landed. Jamie Lee Curtis and Ghostbusters' Dan Ackroyd have done better elsewhere (watch their turns in Trading Places instead). With unlikeable and no personality characters, Christmas With The Kranks feels too cynical, mundane and petty to be ever enjoyed, at all, never mind fully. For a film that bashes anything or anyone that enjoys or celebrates Christmas for whatever reasons, Christmas With The Kranks is lauded by many as one of the worst Christmas films of all-time and watching this, one might go 'cranky'. I turned it off after 30 mins. It was not enjoyable & is one of the worst Crimbo movies for me.
Is It Worth Watching?
Not unless you are a die-hard Tim Allen fan
